Swift Takes Glenelg Cup

The Glenelg Cup finally got underway today, after day one of the tournament was cancelled due to wet weather conditions. Usually a 36 hole event, the competition format was altered to 18 holes to accommodate for the lost day.

Players made their way around the Murray Course at Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club with rain still falling.

Whilst many players found the course challenging due to unfavourable conditions, Vivienne Swift from Howlong Golf Club had no such trouble finishing with a score of 69 (Nett) off a handicap of 25.

Swift’s nearest rival was Libby Mott from Commercial Albury Golf Club who also demonstrated that rain was no influence over her golf.  Swift however was able to hold a one stroke lead, with Mott (Hcap 27),  finishing in runner up position.

The best 18 holes Gross score was won by June Woznica from Moe Golf Club who finished with 92 strokes (Hcap 19).

Thank you to all the women who braved the cold, wet and windy conditions today and special thanks to all the helpers for their assistance.

CHAMPIONSHIP CONTINUES DESPITE TOUGH CONDITIONS

Day two of the Victorian Country Championships began with participants completing the 18 holes at Yarrawonga and Border Golf Course under constant rainfall and chilly winter conditions. After the first day of the Championship was cancelled due to heavy rain resulting in unplayable oncourse conditions the Championship, usually a 36 holes qualifier, was reduced to an 18 holes qualifier.

The going was slow for those players that still participated in the event with the rain and already wet conditions making the 18 holes a challenge for even the most skilled golfer. Still the players moved through the 18 holes of the Lake Course enjoying the design and the degree of difficulty it provided.

As the day progressed those participating in the Championship made their way around the course despite the raining showing no signs of clearing. Wind proved to be another element that players had to contend with, and whilst players kept the ball low when driving down the fairway some still found themselves in the rough.

Whilst all players showed remarkable skill on the course, only eight players qualified for stage two of the Championship. Tomorrow the top eight finalists will begin knockout matchplay in the morning with those winning progressing to the next round until only to finalists remain for the Friday.

Special thanks to all players who participated in the championship despite the bad weather, your contribution to the game of golf and the Championship is invaluable.

Hole In One

Amidst all the chaos surrounding the weather and winners of the Glenelg Cup, Grace Parkinson from Kyneton Golf Club scored a hole-in-one on the second hole of the Murray Course – Congratulations Grace! ...an accomplishment most golfers can only dream of!

Wet Weather Forces Cancellation of Day One Play

Due to terrible weather conditions of heavy rain and lightning resulting in flooded greens, today's Country Championship round one qualifier and round one of the Glenelg Cup have been cancelled.

The Country championship will now be played as a 18 hole qualifier, whilst the Glenelg Cup will be played as an 18 hole event.

FOUR TAKE FOURSOMES TITLE

Hosted by the sensational Yarrawonga and Border Golf Club the Victorian Country Foursomes Championship (Marion Dwyer Cup) began today under near perfect weather. With a field of sixty-eight pairs the day began smoothly with the women teeing off early in the morning.

Play was undertaken on both the Murray course and the Lake course with the split field changing courses at the completion of round one. As players had favourable weather conditions, little error was made on the course resulting in a round one finish that was tightly contested. Davis and Heywood (Murray Downs/Rich River); Gilson and Wooster (Yarra Yarra/Moonah); and Langford and Hagy (Yarrawonga & Border/Howlong) all placed equal first with a gross score of 83 at the conclusion of the first round. A review of the round one results revealed that at least twelve other pairs were within grasp of the lead, sitting within ten strokes of the leaders.

Players received a quick, but well-deserved rest before teeing off again for round two of the Championship. As it was evident this tournament would be no walk-in-the-park, players were driven to play some outstanding golf in order to gain an advantage over their opponents.

The day finished off as sensationally as it had begun with the scores so close that it was still anyone’s guess as to who would win the Championship. Judy Langford from Yarrawonga & Border GC together with playing partner Sara Hagy from Howlong GC currently held the lead with a gross score of 167. However as the latter end of the field made their way off the course it became exceedingly possible that a tie could occur. Sure enough, Maryanne Davis of Murray Downs GC and Kacey Heywood of Rich River GC produced a score of 167 to equal that of the current front runners.

With no playoffs for the Championship both playing pairs tied for the prestigious Marion Dwyer Cup, named Victorian Country Foursomes Champions.

Congratulations to the winning pairs for their remarkable achievement and providing such an exhilarating game of golf for all those present. Congratulation must also be extended to all players for participating in the event.

Special thanks to WGV Country Vice President Sue Rea, Yarrawonga & Border Lady Captain Jo Anwin, Lady President Pamela Barker and the many other members and staff who assisted today – your contribution is greatly appreciated.

About

The Country Championship of Victoria was first played in 1910. This event is extremely popular with country golfers.

The Country Championship is a week long tournament including the Country Championship, Glenelg Cup, Marion Dwyer Country Foursomes, and Stableford Competition.

Country Championship

The Country Championship is open to golfers holding a playing membership with an affiliated WGV country golf club. The event is played with two 18 hole qualifying rounds of strokeplay, followed by knock-out matchplay between the eight highest qualifiers. The winner holds the Country Championship Cup for one year. The player with the best Gross score over 36 holes holds the Betty Kernot Trophy, a gift from the South Western District Golf Association.

Miss Betty Kernot has a remarkable record as a player and club official. A member of Geelong Golf Club from 1923, she was made a Life Member in 1939 and was President from 1952 - 1956. As a player she won the Club Championship 13 times, Australian Championship twice and was runner up once.

Miss Kernot represented Victoria on many occasions in the interstate teams and Australia for the Tasman Cup. The South Western District Golf Association presented the trophy to commemorate Miss Kernot's great contribution.

The Glenelg Cup was first played in 1953 and was open to country players with handicaps between 19 - 25. WGV has since extended the handicap range to 35. The trophy was donated by Mrs. A Nash.
